Hong Kong 2012 Day 1 - 070312

We took the 2am Jetstar flight from Singapore and reached Hong Kong at 6am.  It is my first time taking a budget airline and it feels okay!(Perhaps I am still young!)

The first thing that we do was to buy an Octopus Card.

It costs us HKD$150 with HKD$100 as the card value.  However, it was not enough for us as we top HKD$50 during our trip.

We then took Bus S1 to Tung Chung MTR.  The bus stop was very hard to find and we had to rely on a local who is on his way back home to get to the bus stop.  The bus was designed to fetch tourists to the Tung Chung MTR as there is a designated area for you to place your luggage!

We found out in TripAdvisor that there is a locker service for luggage at CityGate Outlet at Tung Chung.  It was found at basement 2 and 3 and there was a slight problem when we reach there.  They only accept coins and we did not have coins on the first day!  Luckily the mall's security came with coins to load into the coin machines and we changed with the machine after he has reloaded the coins.

After putting down all our luggage, we went to MacDonalds for breakfast as there was nothing to eat in CityGate at that time at 7am.

After breakfast, we went to the Tung Chung Bus Terminal to take Bus 23 to Ngong Ping as the cable car was down!  What a pity!

As we did not have a good night sleep on the JetStar plane, we slept on the bus and reached Ngong Ping within 1 hour.

We went to the Po Lin Monastery and Big Buddha first as it was very central and there was nothing very special about the place except that it is very quiet and peaceful.  There are souvenirs shops around and we bought a couple of stuffs back.

What is more interesting is Path of Wisdom which not many people went there as it was not very easy to find and many gave up finding them.  It was a 15min walk to Path of Wisdom from the central area.

We then settled our lunch at Po Lin for a vegetarian lunch.  It was okay as we were not used to eating vegetarian for a meal.

We then went back Citygate Outlet to retrieve our luggage before taking the MTR to Mongkok to get to our hotel - Pop Hotel.

Pop Hotel is a 3-star budget hotel at Mongkok, 5min walk from the MTR station.  Initially I did not have a very high expectation of the hotel because of the Taipei incident!(hope you guys have read about it!).  However, Pop hotel is very clean and it looks like a 4-star hotel just that the hotel room is very small.  I guess this is very common as Hong Kong is land-scarce.

After settling down, we set off again to The Peak at around 4pm.

We were very unlucky as the weather turned cloudy and very foggy when we arrive there and we were not able to see anything!

We also went to the Wax Museum at The Peak and these are my favourite photos!!!!

We went down and took the MTR to Victoria Harbour as it was just nice 8pm when we reach there to watch the Light Symphony.

After a long day, we went to Ladies Market which is near our hotel to walk briefly.  Bargaining skills is a must!
